Migration

Migration is the process of switching between incompatible major Joomla versions, for example from Joomla 3.x to 4.x or from 4.x to 5.x. It involves transferring data and adapting extensions and templates.

  • Function and Purpose

A migration is necessary when there are major differences between two Joomla major versions. Unlike a simple update, a migration requires checking and adapting data, templates, and extensions for compatibility.

    Migration Steps

    • Create a backup: Complete backup of files and database.
    • Check compatibility: Verify whether your components, modules, and plugins are available for the target version.
    • Test environment: Perform the migration first on a staging site.
    • Go live: After successful testing, migrate your live site.

    Important Notes

    • Difficulty: A migration can be time-consuming. Allow sufficient time for planning.
    • Template adjustments: Templates often need to be adapted or replaced for the new version.
    • Database: In some cases, database tables need to be adjusted or converted.
