Function and Purpose
The Joomla Update (com_joomlaupdate) scans the official update servers for new versions and displays them in the backend. With one click you can start the update process, which replaces files and updates the database.
Update Process
- Backup: Create a full backup of your files and database before updating.
- Pre-check: Verify under System → Joomla Update whether third-party extensions are compatible.
- Execution: Start the update and follow the instructions. After successful completion your Joomla version will be updated.
Difference from Migration
An update covers smaller version jumps within a major release (e.g., 5.0 to 5.2). Larger jumps between major releases require a migration, which involves additional steps.
