Access Levels

Access levels determine in Joomla who may see which content. By default there are Public, Registered and Special, but you can create your own levels.

  • Function and Purpose

Access levels define which user groups are allowed to see specific content, modules or menu items. Joomla provides three default levels: Public, Registered and Special. You can create as many custom levels as you need.

    Configuration

    • Create: Add new levels in the backend under Users → Access Levels.
    • Group assignment: Assign the groups that should get access to a level.
    • Assignment: Assign an access level to articles, modules or menus to restrict them to certain users.

    Important Notes

    • Hierarchy: Higher levels can see content of lower levels, but not vice versa.
    • Usability: Be careful not to create too many levels to keep things manageable.
    • Fine control: Combined with access rights (ACL) you can achieve precise control.
