Function and Purpose
The Joomla Banners component (com_banners) is used to manage ads or visual placeholders and display them selectively across the site. It’s suitable for classic advertising as well as internal notices, sponsor logos or rotating graphics.
Structure and Elements
- Banner: Individual ads with an image, target link, description and an optional expiration date.
- Categories: Organize multiple banners by topic or campaign. See also Categories.
- Clients: Banners can optionally be assigned to specific clients to generate reports by advertiser.
- Modules: The “Banner” module displays selected ads in the frontend — e.g. in a sidebar or footer.
- Statistics: Joomla automatically counts impressions (views) and clicks.
Typical Use Cases
- Advertising: Display of ad banners, sponsors or affiliate partners.
- Promotional spots: Custom notices like “Sign up now” or “New blog post”.
- Tracking: Click statistics for measuring campaign success.
- Multilingual sites: Different banners per language can be controlled via Languages.
Important Notes
- No third-party dependency: The Banners component is part of the Joomla core — no additional extension required.
- Media management: Images are stored in the integrated Media Manager.
- Archiving: Expired banners can be automatically disabled or archived.
- Responsive implementation: Use templates with flexible module positions to ensure banners display correctly on all devices.
